Transfer Credit Evaluations

Newly Admitted Transfer Students:
After a transfer student is admitted, Evaluations will evaluate previous college work in relation to Cal Poly requirements.  Transfer students will receive an email from Evaluations that their evaluation has been completed and will then be able to access the  Degree Progress Report via the Student Center on the Cal Poly Portal; they cannot access the Degree Progress Report prior to that time, nor can Evaluations provide specific information about credit prior to that time.

The Degree Progress Report will be available to transfer students prior to the date of transfer student registration in August and serves as the basis for determining remaining requirements for the student’s specific objectives. The Degree Progress Report is available throughout a student’s Cal Poly career to track progress toward the degree. More information about the Degree Progress Report can be found here:

Course Transfer Equivalence:
Transfer students attending California Community Colleges or CSUs may refer to articulation agreements on ASSIST, which equate individual courses to Cal Poly major and support courses.  ASSIST also provides CSU General Education lists.  For information on using ASSIST to determine Cal Poly credit, please refer to our “Need Help Figuring Out ASSIST?” flyer.

Some major/support courses may need to be petitioned through the student’s major department if articulation agreements are not in place in ASSIST or if classes were taken at a private institution, a UC, or out-of-state.

Evaluations will convert semester units of credit to quarter units by multiplying semester-unit totals by one and one-half.

Note: Transfer students with Advanced Placement credit must have their scores sent to Cal Poly directly from the College Board; notation of AP exams on a college transcript is not sufficient for Cal Poly to award credit. It is recommended that students do this as soon as possible, in order for the transfer evaluation to be as complete and accurate as possible, and in order to satisfy registration prerequisites.

Newly Admitted Freshmen:
Due to the large number of transcripts that Cal Poly receives, transfer work for newly admitted freshmen will be evaluated within one to two quarters after the official transcript has been received.  Official transcripts must be sent to Cal Poly; we cannot award credit for college courses listed on a high school transcript.

Course Transfer Equivalence:
Freshmen with courses from the California Community Colleges or CSUs who have been admitted to Cal Poly may refer to ASSIST to determine course equivalencies and General Education credit.  For information on using ASSIST to determine Cal Poly credit, please refer to our “Need Help Figuring Out ASSIST?” flyer.

Some major/support courses may need to be petitioned through the student’s major department if articulation agreements are not in place in ASSIST or if classes were taken at a private institution, at a UC, or out-of-state.

Evaluations will convert semester units of credit to quarter units by multiplying semester-unit totals by one and one-half.

Currently Enrolled Cal Poly Students:
Due to the large number of transcripts that Cal Poly receives, transfer work for current Cal Poly students will be evaluated within one to two quarters after the official transcript has been received.  Once the transcript has been evaluated, courses will be added to the student’s record and will be viewable on the Degree Progress Report.
